Vladimir Uyba, the acting head of the Komi Republic, spoke against the project of the landfill near station Shies on the border with Arkhangelsk Oblast. He announced this on April 17 at the remote press conference when answering a question from the journalist of 7x7.

— There must not be any projects that can harm the environment, - said the acting head of the Komi Republic at the press conference. — When we [Vladimir Uyba and acting Governor of Arkhangelsk Oblast Alexandr Tsybulsky] were introduced by the ambassador on April 3, I talked to Tsybulsky about it. Just two days ago, I called him on the phone, and he said that he was absolutely against it. That makes the two of us, and I told him, “I agree with you.” I used to be a member of the IAEA by the nature of my job. I used to go there once a year. One of the sights of Vienna is the incineration plant. If it is done in such a way that it serves as a decoration, does not cause any harm, gives additional heat, if the approach is correct, professional, modern and does not harm any people and the environment, then such projects should be considered. The safety of man and nature are above all things.

The Head of the Komi Republic was replaced on April 2 amid a coronavirus outbreak in the Republic. Mass rallies against the landfill at Shies were held in Syktyvkar and towns of Komi in 2019.
