About 450 Norwegians passed with torches and portraits of Frode Berg in Kirkenes (a city on the border with Russia). The protesters demanded "To return Frode home". The Kirkenes residents started collecting funds to send to the Lefortovo detention center. Norwegians expressed hope that their government would not subject the Russians to reciprocal measures and sanctions.
In early December in Moscow, FSB officers arrested the retired frontier guard Frode Berg on charges of espionage. He filmed the changing bed of the border river between Russia and Norway and advocated the strengthening of good-neighborly relations between the countries. Kirkenes Mayor Rune Rafaelsen wrote a letter to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a request to begin negotiations with the Russian president on the extradition of Berg to his homeland.
Lawyer Ilya Novikov, who defended Ukrainian woman Nadezhda Savchenko in the Russian court, announced that he would defend Berg. A Norwegian was arrested by the same brigade of the FSB under the same scenario as the Ukrainian Yuri Soloshenko in 2014. According to Novikov, Berg has language difficulties and complains of high blood pressure. The Norwegian is charged with coordination of Russians recruited by Norway, another Norwegian citizen invited him to Russia.
