Andrey Chibis, the Governor of Murmansk Oblast, was attacked with a knife. He was wounded and required surgery, reported the region’s head’s press office in the evening of April 4.
The incident occurred in the town of Apatity. On April 4, Andrey Chibis was leaving a meeting with locals at the 'Stroitel' cultural center, when somebody attacked him and stabbed in the abdomen.
Chibis was taken to the Apatity-Kirov Hospital and underwent surgery. After the procedure, he recorded a video and thanked the doctors: "I am going to take time to recover now, and then return to the fight, always moving forward. Everything is going to be alright." Later, Chibis was transferred to the Murmansk Regional Hospital.
According to Baza, the attacker is a resident of Apatity named Alexander Bydanov. He claimed to have attacked Chibis because of 'voices in his head.' Following the incident, the regional division of the Investigative Committee initiated a criminal case.
As per Meduza, the attack on Chibis has become the first attempt on a governor’s life in the last 15 years. In 2009, a car rigged with 70 kg of explosives blew up near the motorcade of Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, the head of Ingushetia. The politician sustained serious injuries.
