A court in Naryan-Mar has sentenced Yuri Zhdanov, a member of the housing committee of the village of Iskateley, to three years of conditional sentence. He was detained on suspicion of abuse of office in March. According to investigators, he illegally allocated an apartment to a local resident. The accused is the father of Ivan Zhdanov, the Anti-Corruption Foundation's* ex-head. Ivan Zhdanov and Vladimir Voronin, the lawyer of the accused, reported this on Twitter.

Yuri Zhdanov was found guilty of swindling (Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and official forgery, that is, the introduction of known false information into official documents (Part 2 of Article 292 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). In addition to three years of the conditional sentence, he was given two-year probation period. Sever.Realii** reported with reference to Zhdanov's support group that the audience had not been allowed to attend the meeting.

According to Ivan Zhdanov, his father was released from custody in the courtroom. The agency changed the pretrial restraint to travel restrictions and recognizance to behave. During the probation period, he cannot move without notifying the supervisor and must periodically report for registration to the designated agency.

In March 2021, Yuri Zhdanov was arrested in a criminal case of abuse of office (Part 1 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to investigators, as a member of the housing committee of the village of Iskateley, he recommended the municipality’s head to allocate an apartment to a woman under a contract of social rent. It turned out later that this family had already been given a housing allowance. At the same time, the head of the village did not become a defendant in the criminal case.

Zhdanov was detained immediately after his son left Russia amid criminal cases against Alexei Navalny’s supporters. ACF’s* ex-head believes that the criminal case was opened against his father because of his work in Navalny's team.

According to lawyer Vladimir Voronin, Yuri Zhdanov was kept in jail for all eight months, despite his health problems (the man suffers from hypertension).
