Viktor Anufriev, the lawyer of historian and the Karelian Memorial’s head Yury Dmitriev, appealed against the verdict of the Petrozavodsk City Court, which had sentenced the defendant to three and a half years of high security for sexual violence against his daughter. Anufriev himself told 7x7 about it.

— We asked the court to fully acquit him, but he was only partially acquitted. Therefore, I will seek for the court to deliver a judgment in the case in accordance with the evidence in the case file. I heard that the Prosecutor's office in Petrozavodsk had also appealed the sentence. We are going to wait for the appeals instance. Two appeals in such a case are quite natural: that side is not satisfied with the court's decision, so are we, - said Viktor Anufriev.

On July 22, the Petrozavodsk City Court sentenced historian Yury Dmitriev to three and a half years in a maximum security penal colony in the case on sexual violence against his daughter. He was acquitted of lewd act, illegal production of pornography, and illegal possession of weapons.

This is the second sentence in Dmitriev’s case: in 2018, the court declared him not guilty in a criminal case on making child pornography. The court of appeal overturned this sentence and remanded the case for a new trial.

In 1997, Yury Dmitriev, together with representatives of the St. Petersburg Memorial, discovered one of the largest burial of victims of Stalin’s terror in Karelia — Sandarmokh.
