A bucket on the Lomonosov monument outside Moscow State University as a landfill protest

Activists opposing the construction of a landfill at Shies station in the Arkhangelsk Region attached a red bucket to the monument to the Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov at the building of Moscow State University. This was announced on April 29 by Rain TV channel with reference to the participant of the action.

On the red bucket, there is an inscription "Someone’s loss is others’ gain."

“The decision to pollute the land of the Pomors is puzzling. Tens of thousands of local residents are already protesting against this plan. Putting a problem on others only confirms stereotype that the "self-indulgent Moscow residents" do not care what happens throughout the country. The time has come to debunk this myth,” TV Rain quoted activists.

The activists of the Arkhangelsk Region and the Komi Republic did not know about this action. This is how activist Victor Vishnevetsky commented on it:

“It is creative. I agree that Moscow should sort and recycle its waste itself. Construction of landfills in the North, a very fragile nature is the wrong decision. Processing plants in central Russia are not loaded with raw materials. Moscow and the Moscow region should establish a separate collection of waste for further use in enterprises.

In July 2018, the construction of a landfill for Moscow and the Moscow Region, which is called “Ekotekhnopark “Shies”, began in the Arkhangelsk region. Thousands of people from the Arkhangelsk region and the Komi Republic are protesting against the transportation of Moscow garbage.

Mikhail Lomonosov is a Russian natural scientist of the 18th century. Encyclopaedist, poet, physicist and chemist. He was born in 1711 in the Arkhangelsk guberniya.
