On September 23, the coordinator of the youth democratic movement "Vesna" in Kostroma Sergey Skvortsov held a single picket near Shagovsky pond. He demanded a public environmental assessment of the construction of a new landfill near Kostroma.
The activist put on a protective medical mask and held a poster with the inscription: "Do you want it like in Volokolamsk? We demand public expertise." Almost no one came because of the rain, only a few people passed by.
According to Skvortsov, he chose such a place for a picket because the Shagovsky pond is a corner of wildlife located in the immediate vicinity of the city center. According to him, the construction of a landfill near the village Medenikovo can pose a threat to the ecological well-being of Kostroma residents.
The information about the construction of a new solid municipal waste landfill near the village Medenikovo of the Kuzmischensky rural settlement of the Kostroma district became known in November 2017. The investor was the company "ETM Polygon". The Kostroma regional ecological movement "In the name of life" opposed it, because the chosen site for the landfill placement is in the third zone of sanitary protection of the Bashutinsky water intake and poses a threat to the strategic reserves of groundwater.
At the end of December 2017, residents of the Kuzmischy settlement spoke out against the organization of the landfill site. On August 13, the Department of Rosprirodnadzor for the Yaroslavl region began the state environmental assessment of the project.
In May, the leadership of the movement "In the name of life" requested from ETM Polygon LLC project documentation for the public environmental assessment, but has not received it yet. On September 7, co-chairman of the organization Valentina Yamshchikova appealed to the court to oblige the investor of the landfill to submit documents for public environmental assessment. On September 16, a mass picket was organized by Kostroma environmentalists and the regional branch of the Yabloko party demanding that the ETM Polygon provide documents for environmental public assessment.
