According to the press service of the Government of Karelia, reparation the maternity ward of the Pitkyaranta District Hospital was completed.
Wards, consulting room and other rooms of the obstetric and gynecological department were also repaired. Windows, some doors were replaced; a separation wall between the maternity unit and the surgical department (now delivery room) was installed.
"Obstetric and gynecological department is organized on the territory of the surgical department of the hospital in the immediate vicinity of the operating room and the intensive care unit. The necessary equipment, supplies for emergency delivery are available," said acting regional Deputy Minister of Health Elena Kuzmicheva, who visited the renovated department.
Local residents told the «7x7» correspondent that they had not yet visited the hospital, but the women who were staying in the hospital confirmed that repairs were carried out at that time.
"There was a repair, but we have one gynecologist for the whole district, and she goes on vacation at the end of August," Anna Boykova said.
Residents of Pitkyaranta protested against the optimization in the health sector, which affected the hospital in their city, in 2016.
In June 2018 patients of the local hospital made a video message to Putin and asked not to close the maternity ward in Pitkyaranta. The Karelian authorities tried to convince the women that Pitkyaranta would benefit from the closure of the maternity ward, and it would be better for them to give birth in Petrozavodsk or Sortavala.
After the second meeting with regional officials on June 19, women protested and demanded to maintain the maternity ward in Pitkyaranta. On July 3, they inspected the repair in the hospital and found deficiencies — the premises for pregnant women are in the surgical department, and the men’s room is opposite to the obstetric room.
In mid-July, the head of Karelia Arthur Parfenchikov promised that the new maternity ward would be detached from the rest of the departments of the Pitkyaranta hospital.
In August 2018, "Atypical Pitkyaranta" group on "VKontakte" reported that the pregnant woman lost twins on the way to Petrozavodsk — she had premature birth on the road.
