Volunteers of the international environmental organization Greenpeace told Petrozavodsk residents how to stop using plastic bags and replace them. The action took place at one of the grocery stores in the city. According to the organizers, trading network are the main source of distribution of plastic goods.

“People react very positively, a lot of parents with children,” Anastasia Nikitinskaya, a Greenpeace employee from Moscow, said. “In fact, you don’t even have to discuss it with people, because they themselves say: “Oh, yes, disposable plastic bags are the source of the plastic trash, and it needs to be limited.” And, in fact, there is a lake nearby, and people see that disposable plastic is lying on the shore. We show that in Russia there is a request to reduce disposable packaging and discard plastic bags. For 1.5 years we have a lot of things happened. Maybe you heard that the State Duma offered to ban disposable packages by 2025 — maybe they will think a little more after these events and decide to do so with all disposable plastic.”

The organizers of the action also suggested that residents of the city sign a petition to the largest Russian trading network with a request to remove excess plastic packaging from the shelves. In exchange, people were given small eco-bags for food. About 50 residents of Petrozavodsk took part in the action.

In total, Greenpeace volunteers will hold eight such actions in different cities of Russia, they also suggest that Russian volunteers support the action and hold it in their hometown.
