On March 6, the trial of the Karelian researcher of the Stalinist repressions Yury Dmitriev, who is accused of sexual assault against a minor, continued. The prosecution questioned three more witnesses.
The witnesses included Arkady Rutgizer, head physician of Polyclinic No. 2 of Petrozavodsk, as well as a gynecologist and a psychologist. The session is closed, because it affects the interests of the underage adoptive daughter of Dmitriev.
Lawyer Viсtor Anufriev did not disclose the details of the meeting, he said, this is a standard procedure — the prosecution is trying to prove Dmitriev’s guilt by calling witnesses. The next meeting is scheduled for April 1.
A few hours before the court extended the preventive measure to Dmitriev, the researcher would remain under arrest until June 25.
At the February 27 meeting, the eldest daughter of Karelian researcher Ekaterina Klodt spoke in court, the prosecution questioned her for about an hour and a half. She did not disclose the essence of the interrogation, but stressed that her statement did not mean that she gave any evidence against her father.
The head of the Karelian branch of the society "Memorial", one of those who opened the memorial complex of victims of political repression "Sandarmokh", Yury Dmitriev was first detained on December 13, 2016 on suspicion of making pornographic pictures of his adopted daughter. On December 16, he was arrested and sent to SIZO-1 of Petrozavodsk. In July 2017, the Interregional Human Rights Organization “Memorial” recognized Yury Dmitriev as a political prisoner and demanded to stop his criminal prosecution.
On January 27, Dmitriev left the SIZO on a written undertaking not to leave the place. The judge of the Petrozavodsk city court Marina Nosova on April 5, 2018 acquitted the researcher, but the Supreme Court of Karelia cancelled this decision on June 14. Yury Dmitriev was again detained on June 27, 2018. The investigative committee opened a new criminal case under the article on “sexual assault of a sexual nature against a minor”. At the request of lawyer Victor Anufriev, Judge Alexander Merkov merged both cases into one.
