The head of the Karelian "Memorial" Yury Dmitriev was sent to the St. Petersburg pre-trial detention center No. 1 for a new psychiatric assessment.
According to his daughter Ekaterina Klodt, Dmitriev was taken from the Petrozavodsk remand prison on 15 July. His lawyer Victor Anufriev wants to get to St. Petersburg pre-trial detention center.
"Today we challenged the arrest of Yury Alexeevich and his stay in the remand center in the Supreme Court. During the meeting, the judge read out a telephone message stating that Dmitriev could not attend the meeting, as he was transferred to Petersburg," Anufriev said.
Defence of the Karelian historian will appeal the measure of restraint (prison detention) on July 23.
The historian, head of the Karelian branch of "Memorial" Yury Dmitriev, was detained in his apartment on December 13, 2016. The reason was a denunciation: allegedly the historian had pornographic pictures of his foster-daughter on the computer. Two days later Dmitriev was placed in jail for two months, after which the term of arrest was extended many times. The court acquitted the historian in the case of pornography on April 4, 2018. However, on June 27, 2018 he was detained again, and on June 28 it became known that the Investigative Committee had instituted a new criminal case under the article "Sexual violence against a child under fourteen".
During his final statement on March 27, 2018, Yury Dmitriev read a letter of his foster-daughter, who was allegedly a victim of violence. In the letter, the girl wrote about her love for the adoptive father.
Yury Dmitriev, researcher of Stalin's repressions in Karelia, was among the regional ethnographers who discovered places of mass graves in Sandarmokh.
