Deputies of the City Council renamed the park in front of the entrance to the Russian embassy in Vilnius in honor of the deputy of the Yaroslavl regional duma Boris Nemtsov. He was killed in Moscow in 2015. Vilnius is the second capital after Washington to commemorate Nemtsov. In January 2018, the street outside the Russian embassy in Washington was renamed after Nemtsov. This decision was also promoted by Vladimir Kara-Murza. Together with Boris Nemtsov, Kara-Murza tried to run for the Yaroslavl Regional Duma, but he was not registered as a candidate because of the dual citizenship of Russia and the United States. He litigates this decision in the European Court of Human Rights.
In 2018, there was no annual procession of Nemtsov's memory in Yaroslavl as the event was not coordinated. Civil activists have installed three posters near the regional Duma in memory of the murdered politician.
