Civil activists Yana and Vladislav Tannagashevs, representatives of the Shor indigenous people and defenders of the Siberian indigenous people’s rights, left Russia. According to the Anti-Discrimination Center "Memorial", they had been persecuted by the siloviki and coal companies of the Kemerovo region for a long time.

Human rights defenders left Russia for Europe with their children and asked for political asylum in one of the countries. According to the "Memorial", siloviki monitored their telephone conversations, law enforcement officials came to their home, warned about the consequences of human rights activity, FSB officers talked to friends and relatives of activists, there were also threats against children. In the past few months, the pressure has intensified.

According to the "Memorial", they helped to create several reports on violations of the rights of the indigenous peoples of Siberia to the UN Committee on Socio-Economic and Cultural Rights and to the Council of Europe (on the implementation of the Framework Convention on the Protection of National Minorities). They spoke about racial discrimination, minority rights and human rights at UN forums.

"Yana Tannagasheva is known for her fearlessness and uncompromising struggle for the rights of the Shor people and other indigenous peoples — she constantly opposed discrimination in her region and internationally. The Shor human rights activists participated in the preparation of a number of reports submitted in cooperation with Anti-Discrimination Center "Memorial," the release states.

On April 16, defender of the indigenous people’s rights Pavel Sulyandziga, who also had to emigrate, spoke in support of Yana Tannagasheva at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York.

Yana and Vladislav Tannagashevs founded a civil organization "Revival of Kazas and the Shor people". In 2014, their ancestral house was burned by unknown people (they suspected local coal companies). Perpetrators were not found. Yana Tannagasheva was fired from the local school.
