About 1,300 employees of the former Volkswagen plant in Kaluga Oblast were compelled to quit as the management reduced compensation for downtime. The news of the mass resignations was reported on December 12 by the interregional trade union 'Rabochaya Assotsiatsiya' ('The Work Association').
Approximately 1,300 individuals resigned from the former Volkswagen plant in the Kaluga region. The trade union asserts that this was prompted by new measures implemented by the management, including the alleged cancellation of corporate transportation for workers and the imposition of downtime spent on the plant's premises, with a corresponding decrease in payment.
'The Work Association' states that around 500 individuals are currently being called for downtime. Workers are convinced that these are excess employees whom plant managers are attempting to force out.
Furthermore, the trade union accused the management of destroying equipment and car assembly lines left by Volkswagen. According to the 'Work Association's' statement, workshops were cleared to make space for parking cars imported from China.
In May 2023, the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga Oblast was acquired by the 'Avilon' company. In the summer, rumors circulated about the enterprise being repurposed for woodworking. However, local authorities denied both the plant's requalification and mass layoffs. They reported that employees are being offered various temporary work options, and the facilities left by the former plant owner will be used for 'new purposes.'
